Updated Friday, October 16, 2009 9:53 am TWN, CNA China expected to open tourism office soon“I hope a mechanism can be established before the end of this year,” said MAC Vice Chairman Liu Te-shun. A day earlier, Lai Seh-jen, director-general of the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, said that following the completion of inter-agency discussions, the government is ready to put into effect regulations governing Chinese tourism offices in Taiwan, paving the way for China to open such an office in Taipei. Taiwan and China reached an agreement June 13 to allow visits to the island by Chinese tourists and the reciprocal establishment of tourism offices on either side of the strait. However, Liu declined to confirm or deny a news report that Liu Guishan, vice president of the Beijing-based Cross-Straits Tourism Exchange Association, has been assigned by the China National Tourism Bureau as the first head of the proposed Chinese office in Taiwan. As to the organizational structure of a Taiwanese tourism office in China and who will serve as its head, Liu said those issues can be decided only after further discussion between the MAC and the Tourism Bureau.
