New vice premier hopes for more cross-strait visits

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Vice Premier-designate Eric Chu said yesterday that he hopes to see breakthroughs in mutual visits by higher-level officials from Taiwan and China when cross-strait relations stabilize.

Chu said Taipei and Beijing must maintain practical cross-strait ties, avoid conflicts and disputes and solve problems, according to the Central News Agency.

All of President Ma Ying-jeou's cross-strait policies have shown a clear direction towards such ends, and the new Cabinet will continue following it, Chu was cited as saying. Chu, who is set to leave his post as magistrate of Taoyuan County for the vice premiership, has been seen as a potential successor to the president.
