Kaohsiung City mayor willing to visit China again: report

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- Following her recent ice breaking visit to China in mid-May, Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu and a stalwart of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chen Chu, said she would like to visit China again if there is another chance to do so, the Singapore based Lianhe Zaobo reported yesterday.

“Of course I would like to visit China again, if the opportunity arises, although I don't know when,” Chen was quoted by the newspaper as saying during an interview last week in Taiwan. “As a member of the global village, we should reach out and must not leave out China.”

Chen visited China May 21-24 to promote this summer's World Games that will be held in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City July 16-26.

On the question of whether the China trip had impacted on her political ideas and beliefs, Chen said “no,” adding that it is impossible for that to happen in three days.

She called on Beijing to listen to voices other than those of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) if it wants to gain a better and more accurate understanding of Taiwan.

If Beijing only engages the KMT, it will not be able to hear the different opinions in Taiwan, she said.

“Whether or not you like it, the opposition DPP still has the support of some 40 percent of the Taiwan people,” she said. “This is precisely the biggest difference between Taiwan and China. In contrast to China, Taiwan is a democratic and multi-faceted society.”
