China aims to strengthen Taiwan ties: State Council

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- China yesterday announced a plan to strengthen partnership with Taiwan to develop its Fujian Province. The plan was announced by the Chinese State Council and published on its Web site. China is seeking to establish an economic development zone in Fujian, which is west of the Taiwan Strait.

According to experts, Fujian is the slowest to develop among all provinces on China's east coast. The mainland hopes to develop the area with the help and expertise of Taiwan, which sits directly across from Fujian.

According to the plan, China will open the economic development zone to Taiwan banks and insurance and securities firms to expand services such as currency exchange and clearance.
