No timetable for signing CECA with China: premier

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The government has not set a timetable for the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) with China, because this will depend partly on the progress of negotiations between the two sides, Premier Liu Chao-shiuan said yesterday.

Liu said the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Mainland Affairs Council are currently trying to integrate their efforts to promote the agreement. The premier made the remarks while fielding questions about the issue during an interpellation session in the Legislative Yuan.

Liu was also asked to comment on a claim by opposition Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Chairman Huang Kun-huei that China is working to unify with Taiwan by 2016.

Liu, however, said Taiwan has not set any such timetable and that he has no idea where Huang obtained that information.

The pro-independence TSU and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have strongly objected to the proposed Taiwan-China CECA, arguing that such an agreement would undermine Taiwan's sovereignty and pave the way for unification with China.
