Cross-strait ties reach ‘mutual non-denial’ stage

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s relations with China have progressed to a stage in which the two sides no longer deny each other, thanks to the government’s efforts to improve ties over the past six months, a Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) official said yesterday.

According to MAC Vice Chairman Chao Chien-min, this “mutual non-denial” stage marks a milestone in the transition from “mutual denial” to “mutual recognition” between the two sides. Chao made the remarks while addressing an award-presentation ceremony for short films addressing the theme of cross-Taiwan Strait exchanges. The change, he said, is demonstrated in the fact that Chinese officials are now willing to recognize the official capacity of Taiwanese government officials and to visit Taiwan’s president, Chao said.
