Lien Chan meets with Hu Jintao at APEC summit

Hu, accompanied by Wang Yi, director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, said for his part that he was happy to meet Lien again, and lauded his efforts in promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations over the years.

Hu also lauded the four agreements signed between the two quasi-official intermediary bodies — Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation and China’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) — during ARATS President Chen Yunlin’s Nov. 3-7 visit to Taiwan. Hu said the accords, including the expansion of direct cross strait air links and shipping, ushered in a “new chapter in cross-strait relations.”

Lien first met Hu in Beijing in 2005 during his term as chairman of the then-opposition KMT and has since spearheaded the party’s efforts to develop friendship with China.

Lin Ching-hsiu, deputy head of the Government Information Office and spokesman for the Taiwanese delegation at the forum, said Lien will be grouped with Bush during APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) discussions to be held Saturday.

Besides the two closed-door leadership conferences to take place that same day, Lin said the ABAC will provide another platform under the APEC framework for the two leaders to meet and exchange views.

He added that Lien will also be seated next to Bush during a banquet at Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense, giving a further opportunity for dialogue.
