Over 1,000 Chinese tourists expected to visit per day soon

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The number of inbound tourists from mainland China is expected to surge gradually to the range of 1,000 to 1,200 per day by the end of the year, due mainly to a sharp increase in direct charter flights across the Taiwan Straits following the historical talk in Taipei between Chairman P.K. Chiang of the Straits Exchange Foundation and his Chinese counterpart Chen Yunlin of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits.

On Nov. 4, Chiang and Chen signed pacts on promoting exchanges between both sides, including one agreement on allowing airlines from Taiwan and China to operate charter direct flights per day instead of on weekends as practiced now.

Under the pact, airlines of both sides are allowed to operate 54 flights each between eight Taiwanese cities and 21 Chinese cities.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has completed allocation of cross-straits flights among domestic airlines. Of them, China Airlines will operate 14 flights between Taiwan and China per week, with four to be destined for Shanghai, and EVA Airways Corp. will offer 15 flights, also with four to Shanghai.

In addition, Trans Asia Airways will be allowed to operate nine flights between Taiwan and China, followed by UNI Airways and Mandarin Airlines with eight flights each.

The availability of increased direct charter flights will fuel the influx of more and more tourists from China, officials with the Tourism Bureau under the MOTC said.

The officials continued that the government here will also relax restrictions on the minimum number of any tourist group from China to five members from the existing 10, so as to attract more Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan.

On another front, mainland Chinese authorities are also expected to allow people in five more provinces and cities to visit Taiwan, in addition to the existing 13 provinces and cities.

The number of Chinese travel agencies allowed to organize tourist groups to Taiwan will be sharply expanded to 60 from the existing 13.

All these are expected to significantly help promote more Chinese tourists to visit the island.
