HTC lets global top-ten foothold slip: research

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In the second quarter of this year HTC lost its position among the world's top 10 smartphone handset makers in terms of sales, falling to 11th of the 14 notable brands included in a study by a research institute.

According to ABI Research, HTC in the second quarter sold 6.63 million smartphones, ranking 11th globally, with its worldwide market share declining to 2.89 percent despite enjoying 20-percent quarter-on-quarter sales growth for the same period. Accounting for sales of all mobile phones, including feature phones — handsets which are not considered smartphones — the company's global market share rated at an even lower 1.58 percent, said the research institute.

The global smartphone sector in the second quarter was led by Samsung with sales of 74.4 million units, and a market share of 32.47 percent, followed by Apple with sales of 31.24 million units and a market share of 13.63 percent and LG with sales of 12.1 million and a market share of 5.28 percent.

Chinese brands ZTE, Lenovo, Huawei and Coolpad occupied positions four to seven respectively in terms of total worldwide smartphone sales.

Most notably, of mainland Chinese brands, Xiaomi (小米) in particular posted marked growth, selling 3.8 million units in the second quarter and 7 million units in the first half of 2013, propelling the company into the 12th position.

Nokia, the world's sole Windows 8 smartphone maker, was ninth with sales of 7.4 million units. Sony, once considered a laggard behind HTC, sold 9.6 million units in the second quarter of this year, taking eighth.

The research institute indicated concern over HTC's current strategy of focusing on a single flagship model, urging the company to provide a more comprehensive portfolio of product offerings. It stated that despite a rally in sales volume propelled by its flagship New HTC One, earnings are expected to suffer in the third quarter due to the lack of new product launchings.
