HTC falls out of top 10 phone brands: Gartner

TAIPEI--Taiwan's HTC Corp. fell out of the world'stop 10 smartphone makers in the first quarter as the company's sales continued to slide, tech tracking firm Gartner Inc. said in a report.

The report showed that HTC shipped 5.36 million smartphones in the first three months of 2013, dropping it a notch to 11th place in the global market with a 2.5-percent share.

Both figures were lower than the 6.69 million units shipped by HTC and its 3.2-percent share in the fourth quarter, when the Taiwanese manufacture was 10th in the ranking, the report said.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. remained the top vendor in the first quarter with a 30.8 percent market share, followed by Apple Inc. (18.2 percent), LG Electronics Inc. (4.8 percent), Huawei Technologies Co. (4.4 percent) and ZTE Corp. (3.8 percent).

The report did not identify those ranked sixth to 10th.

Gartner said that worldwide smartphone sales totaled 210 million units in the first quarter of 2013, up 42.9 percent from the same period of 2012.

Meanwhile, smartphones accounted for 49.3 percent of worldwide mobile phones sales in the quarter, up from 44 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

HTC, which faces stiff competition from bigger rivals Samsung and Apple, reported revenues of NT$42.8 billion (US$1.43 billion) during the January-March period, plunging 29 percent from the previous quarter and 37 percent from the year earlier period.

The company attributed the lower-than-forecast revenue in the first quarter to delayed shipments of its new flagship HTC One in certain markets.

Hong Kong-based brokerage CLSA Asia Pacific Markets predicted in early May that HTC's second-quarter revenue will grow by nearly 68 percent to NT$72 billion, as the company's supply constraints for the new HTC One have eased.
