Taiwan's ICT industry bearish on Q3 outlook

The survey, conducted by the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), found that 50 percent of respondents were pessimistic over the July-September period of 2012, while 23 percent were optimistic and 27 percent had no opinion.

Moreover, the business climate index, which is compiled by the TCA, fell 0.33 points to 1.29 for the third quarter of 2012 from 1.62 in the previous quarter, making it the second lowest figure since the survey was first conducted in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The association attributed the decline to the persistent eurozone debt crisis, saying that many companies, especially those that see Europe and the U.S. as their major markets, are pessimistic due to the murky outlook.

However, international buyers were more optimistic than local exhibitors over the third quarter of 2012, the survey showed, with buyers from Asia Pacific and Africa expressing the highest optimism.

In terms of category breakdown, touch panel makers and companies with related technologies held a more bullish outlook over the next three months, with the release of Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows 8 operating system.

Companies in the communications field also showed high optimism due to the cloud computing technology, the association said.

The survey was conducted June 18-27 among 1,245 exhibitors that attended COMPUTEX Taipei June 5-9 with 306 valid responses.
