'The Aesthetic Worlds of the 19th Century'

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- From April 8 to July 24, you won't need to travel all the way to Europe to see the masterpieces of 19th century. On the 30th anniversary of the Orsay Museum, the National Palace Museum is collaborating with the French museum to showcase "The Aesthetic Worlds of the 19th Century." The 69 masterpieces on display, valued at up to NT$15 billion, include Van Gogh's iconic "Noon - Rest from Work," Millet's "The Gleaners" and Renoir's "Girls at the Piano."

Founded in 1986, Orsay Museum is an internationally acclaimed collection of art housed on the left bank of the Seine. It owns one of the most beautiful collections of works from the 19th century, a period that saw an array of innovative schools of painting. In Taipei, Orsay Museum's works are on display in five sections named after their genre and placed in chronological order. Each section features a curated set of 10 paintings so that visitors can take a whirlwind tour through the history of Western art.

Located right by the exhibit entrance, the Romanticism and Classicism section features paintings that reflect techniques from the Renaissance period. The Academism and Realism section focuses on the life French people back then. You will find several iconic paintings of Millet and Renoir, such as the "Girls at the Piano."

In the Impressionism and Naturalism section, the exhibit presents the works of Cezanne and Monet, while the Symbolism and Eclecticism section displays paintings that are lush and high in emotion. A final section features authentic masterpieces from various 20th century modern art painter, with highlights like Vincent Van Gough's "Noon - Rest from Work" and Gauguin's "Paysannes Bretonnes."
