German video art show opens in MOCA, Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An exhibition featuring six works by three German artists opened Tuesday at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Taipei (MOCA), in which the three artists also presented a new video work titled "Taipei Impression" reflecting their impressions and experiences during a one-week stay in Taipei.

Markus Wernhard, director of the Goethe Institut, Taipei, which promotes German culture and language and is one of the exhibition organizers, said that as the development of German video art is in the leading position in the world, the insitute has focused on this area this year to promote cultural communication.

"The exhibition shows different aspects of contemporary video arts in Germany," Wernhard said.

The exhibition, titled "Tripolar-3 Positions in German Video Art," features works by Robert Seidel, Max Hattler and Daniel Burkhardt, who have been involved in video art for several years.

The eight-minute "Taipei Impressions" includes scenes such as raining weather in Taipei, flowers after the rain, umbrellas, bridges and characters on temples.

The exhibition is also accompanied by a film titled "Dreaming with Open Eyes," a two-hour film made by the three artists and 16 other German artists. According to the organizers, it provides "a broader overview of the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of video and experimental film."

The exhibit will run through July 18.
