Nation to broadcast Vienna New Year's Eve concert live
CNATAIPEI -- Classical music fans in Taiwan can look forward to a lineup of pieces by the Strauss family and other composers when the annual New Year's concert by the Vienna Philharmonic is broadcast live in Taiwan on Jan. 1.
December 23, 2013, 12:02 am TWN
The concert, led by Israeli-Argentine conductor Daniel Barenboim, will be broadcast live on Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) channel and streamed to locations in Kaohsiung, Changhua and Yunlin beginning at 6:15 p.m., according to the Ministry of Culture.
Viewing screens will be located outside the preparatory office of the Wei Wu Ying Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung, at the Yuanlin Performance Hall in Changhua and Jen Wen Park in Yunlin.
For more than a half century, the Vienna Philharmonic has performed the music of the Austrian Strauss family — Johann (senior), Johann (junior), Josef and Eduard Strauss — on the morning of Jan. 1 in Vienna, Austria.
This year's program will also include pieces by German composer Richard Strauss to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, the ministry said.
The Vienna Philharmonic has chosen conductor and peace activist Barenboim to lead the concert because year 2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, according to the orchestra.
Audiences from over 80 countries are expected to watch the performance.
