Ma aims for more culture, tech exchange with France

TAIPEI--President Ma Ying-jeou expressed hope yesterday that Taiwan and France can set up an annual consultation meeting to bolster exchanges in technology, trade and culture.

The two countries have been working together closely in technology, with over 200 cooperation agreements signed in that area, Ma said while receiving a visiting delegation of members of the French National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee.

France is Taiwan's closest partner in technology after the United States, Ma said.

He also expressed hope that Taiwan can sign a working holiday agreement with France. The number of Taiwanese traveling to Europe has increased significantly since the European Union extended visa-free privileges to Taiwan in late 2010, he added.

About 2,000 Taiwanese are studying in France, while 600 French people are studying in Taiwan, according to Ma.
