'Life of Pi' sales very strong in international box offices

LOS ANGELES--Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's “Life of Pi” defeated other Hollywood blockbusters in international box office results last weekend, according to latest data released by film distributors.

The 3D shipwreck epic, nearly 80 percent of which was shot in Taiwan, raked in US$60 million in overseas box office receipts last weekend, well over revenues grossed by other smashes like “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “Jack Reacher,” the data showed.

“Life of Pi,” a magical realism adaptation of Canadian novelist Yann Martel's 2002 Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, was premiered in many more countries, including Ukraine, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia and South Korea, last week.

It emerged as the highest-grossing film of the week in all those countries except for South Korea, where it was placed second in box office rankings.
