Time rates 'Life of Pi' as third best film of the year

NEW YORK--Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" was selected as the third-best movie of the year by Time magazine Tuesday, which lauded Lee's "poetic use of 3D" to conjure up lifelike creatures.

The 3D technology used creates "a looking-glass ocean, schools of flying fish and about a million meerkats," the magazine said, less than a month after the film opened in the United States, India and Taiwan.

The magazine article, titled "Top 10 Best Movies," also praises the motion-capture technology used to create the imaginary tiger called Richard Parker with whom the title character, Pi, develops a bond of rivalry and friendship during 227 days cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

"The line of ascension runs from 'Avatar' to 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' to this entrancing feat of magical realism," the magazine said of Lee's film.

Writer Richard Corliss had earlier given accolades to the film's venture into the relatively unexplored realm of 3D, building on innovations heralded by James Cameron's "Avatar."
