Mayday share banana on stage to represent friendship after award win

TAIPEI--Members of the Taiwanese rock band Mayday shared a banana on stage to represent their friendship after grabbing the Best Band award Saturday at the 23rd Golden Melody Awards.

“I want to thank the band's four other members, Stone, Monster, Guan You and Masa. If friendship is a long poem, I think the poem would taste like a banana,” Ashin, the band's vocalist, said during his acceptance speech.

He then pulled out a banana and the five members took turns eating the fruit.

The band, formed in the late 1990s, won the award for its album “Second Round,” released in 2011 after a three-year wait.

They beat Taiwanese bands Sodagreen, Tizzy Bac, Buddha Jump and Mary See the Future to capture the prize.

Meanwhile, aboriginal singer Llid Kaolo won the Best New Artist category, while Best Music Arranger went to George Chen for his work on “Noah's Ark” from Mayday's “Second Round.”

Celebrities and renowned music critics took to the red carpet despite rain on Saturday evening to participate in the biggest music event in the Chinese-speaking world.

Big name stars such as Jay Chou, Hebe Tien, Mayday and South Korea based girl group Miss A walk the red carpet to the delight of screaming fans.

Chou, wearing a sleeveless black top, hit the red carpet with two personal trainers and flexed his arm muscles that he has been working on over the past two months.

Chou, who received three nominations this year including Best Mandarin Male, said he began working out because he wanted to “return to youth” and that he came to the ceremony this year in a “relaxed manner.”

Tien, a member of Taiwanese pop girl group S.H.E who has seven nominations this year including Best Mandarin Female, walked the carpet in a white dress with Best Mandarin Male nominee Yoga Lin.

Tien said she is most nervous about the performance that S.H.E is scheduled to give at the ceremony, as it has been two years since the group last performed together.

“That's really what I'm most nervous about,” said Tien.

Three members of Miss A, the four-member South Korean and Chinese girl group invited to perform at the ceremony, said they are very happy to participate in the ceremony and that they most wanted to cooperate with Jay Chou in Taiwan's music world.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese rock band Mayday, also nominated in seven categories, walked the red carpet in suits. Monster, the band's guitarist, said the group wants to tell everyone that “every band that works hard to play music is the best band.”

Singaporean singer and songwriter Tanya Chua took to the carpet in a deep blue dress with Grammy-winning mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen.

Chua, who also has seven nominations, said her album “Speaking of Love” represents her “new understanding of love” and she hopes to share that feeling with everyone.
