Art teacher wins US prize for mix of new, traditional

PORTLAND--A U.S.-based Taiwanese artist, who won the top award at the 2012 Mississippi Art Faculty Juried Competition recently, said Monday that her educational background helped her to view art from different perspectives and combine the traditional essence with modern aesthetics.

Chang Chung-fan, an assistant professor at Jackson State University, won the Best of Show prize with her acrylic and oil painting titled "Han's Land."

The contest was open to art studies faculty at any Mississippi college or university in the United States.

Chang, who was born in 1984 in Taiwan, studied at Savannah College of Art and Design in the U.S. after graduating from Taipei National University of the Arts.

She told CNA she was the only Asian competitor and that she was surprised to have won the award.

Chang said winning the prize offered a great chance to share her art and ideas with international art lovers.

The Taiwanese teacher said the aesthetics of everyday life were her creative motivation. Her work also explored the process, concept and visual presentation of art, she said.
