Pedestrianized area is needed around NTNU, market: survey

The China Post news staff--Setting up a strolling section around the night market near the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has won support from over 70 percent of respondents to a recent questionnaire survey conducted by the NTNU.

The survey showed that up to 71 percent of NTNU students, visitors to the night market and operators of stores expressed their support for the establishment of a walking area on the Shida Road section between Roosevelt Road and Heping E. Road, in order to absorb a significant portion of crowds of visitors who swarm the lanes and alleys of the NTNU night market.

There are now around 30,000 residents surrounding the NTNU night market, and they have been plagued by the noises generated from the night market, making it a pressing job to establish a pedestrian section on the aforementioned area.

The pedestrian section will help to ease the heavy flow of visitors to the night market, and will, if coupled with the practice of converting a nearby park there into a place for shows and performances, effectively eradicate the undesirable impression that the night market is quite noisy and dirty one.

The NTNU will offer findings of its survey to the Taipei City Government for reference.

Liao Wei-ming, an associate professor at the Department of Visual Design at the NTNU, said that the number of stores operating in the NTNU night market has expanded to over 700 from 200, with the stores forced to be spread into lanes and alleys, thus making residents plagued by the worsening noises and sanitation conditions.

Liao suggested that initially, the proposed walking area can be practiced only on weekends, with vehicles allowed to run on the Shida Road as usual from Monday through Friday.

He continued that the city government can also ban vehicles from entering the night market during peak hours, so as to separate the flow of cars and visitors.

Sure, put in sidewalks, but they will just be used as parking spaces and be blocked by business owners so they are unusable and the government won't enforce relevant regulations... Just walk along Jhongming South Road in Taichung sometime....
