NGO awards student painters for sustainability artTo promote awareness in sustainability, carbon reduction, and energy savings, the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE, 台灣永續能源研究基金會) held a painting competition for junior high school students during the month of September, during which over 1,500 paintings flooded the NGO's office, and the vivid colors of originality and hope pleasantly surprised the TAISE. “The judges were all astonished at the artistic ability and the care for the earth the participating students demonstrated,” TAISE Chairman Eugene Chien (簡又新) said, emphasizing that instead of the gloominess and overwhelming feelings often associated with environmental protection, the Taiwanese children reflected the optimistic future sustainability could bring to the Earth. Deputy-Commissioner of the Taipei City Government Department of Environmental Protection Wu Sheng-Chung(吳盛忠) illustrated the potentially catastrophic effects climate change could pose to the world — especially now that internationalization has increased the independence nations have on one another — with the flood Thailand has been suffering from. Through the flood, the world witnessed nature's strength, and Taiwan, which imports rice from Thailand, sees less provision for its daily foods, Wu pointed out. That our children are coming up with a variety of ideas to reduce carbon depletion and reserve energy, Wu said, is encouraging. Themed “the Earth is More Beautiful Because of Me,” 19 paintings were chosen as finalists, and judges of the competition voiced praise especially for those that placed at the top, commending the observance and precision in artistic expression the students executed. It is the society's responsibility and the TAISE's goal to give children a sustainable world that does not suffer from climate change such as the Earth currently sees, the NGO concluded, encouraging children to continue cultivating knowledge on environmental protection and hope for the coming future. Original copies of the 19 paintings will be on exhibition at the first floor of the Eslite Bookstore Dunhua South branch until Nov. 27. | |||||||||||||
