Taiwanese blockbuster hits Tokyo International Film Festival

TOKYO--The director and main stars of Taiwanese blockbuster "You Are the Apple of My Eye" attended a showing of the film at the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival yesterday, receiving a warm welcome at the event.

The romantic comedy has grossed nearly NT$400 million (US$13.3 million) at the box office in Taiwan since its release in August, making it one of the most economically successful Taiwanese productions in history.

That momentum carried over to the Tokyo film festival, where spectators crowded into the theater — with some people even having to sit in the aisles — for the film's screening.

Director Giddens Ko led Ko Chen-tung and Michelle Chen — the leading actor and actress — in watching the movie with fans, who were seen clinging to fliers of the film and chasing after the stars for autographs after the screening.

The director told the audience that the movie, a story adapted from his romantic memories, partly realizes what he could not achieve in real life — telling a high school classmate on whom he had a crush his true feelings for her.

A Japanese fan at the event told reporters that she had watched the movie in Taiwan when she visited the island earlier this year.
