Chinese film director to stage opera in Taichung

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Chinese film director Zhang Yimou will travel to Taiwan March 27 to stage his extravagant production of Puccini's opera “Turandot” in the central city of Taichung March 27-28, according to the event organizers.

Zhang will convene a pre-event meeting and personally supervise the production to make sure the actors and actresses perform at their best, according to the organizers.

The Bird's Nest production of Turandot features not only vocal talent but also visual and stage effects that successfully incorporate the Chinese cultural landscape into the play.

The magnificent landscape opera, combining special effects usually used in films with operatic elements is not a conventional opera, the organizers added.
