Taiwanese illustrator's works to be displayed at Bologna book fair

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The works of Taiwanese illustrator Page Tsou (Tsou Chung-Sheng) have been selected to be presented at the prestigious Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy later this month.

Tsou is among 87 prominent illustrators worldwide to exhibit their works in the book fair from March 23 to 26.

The fair's Illustrators Exhibition offers a broad picture of the most innovative trends in children's illustration, according to the fair's Web site. Since 1967, it has provided artists from all over the world a unique opportunity to display their talent to key players in the industry who come to Bologna every year.

Established artists and emerging talents are selected by an international jury consisting of publishers, artists and museum directors for the exhibition.

It is only the third time that a Taiwanese illustrator has been selected to present his or her works at the exhibition.

“I am pleased to have an opportunity to communicate with illustrators all over the world. The fair is actually a bridge for illustrators and publishers worldwide,” said Tsou, whose illustrations adopt a modern style, not similar to typical children's illustrations.

The book fair is considered the most important trade show for the exchange of copyrights for children's literature, according to the fair.

Tsou, a young illustrator, likes to experiment with his illustrations. Among Tsou's selected works to be exhibited is “The Gift That Keeps on Giving,” in which Tsou uses his imagination to depict a toy gun in a way that expresses his abhorrence of violence.

Another four of Tsou's works will also be displayed at the illustrators' exhibition in the fair, said Paulina Lin, Director of the Taipei Book Fair Foundation.

Tsou has received a master's degree at the Royal College of Art in the UK, and has won the honor of the Adobe Design Achievement Award. His works have also been selected by the UK's leading illustration competition — AOI image34 in 2009.

The last time a Taiwanese illustrator was selected to exhibit his or her work at the Bologna illustrators' exhibition was in 2008, when Tsou was also the one selected. Prior to that, another Taiwanese illustrator was selected in 1989.

Even though Tsou will not fly to Italy to attend this year's event, he said he expects more opportunities will come to him through the exhibition.

Also at the fair, 39 Taiwanese publishers will exhibit 416 books and sell copyrights for the books at the exhibition's Taiwanese Pavilion.
