Lin Mei Hong's work to premiere in Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwanese choreographer Lin Mei Hong will present the Asia premiere of her latest work “Schwanengesang” (Swan Song) at the National Theater Hall in Taipei from March 12-14.

The piece will be performed by Tanztheater des Staatstheaters Darmstadt, a German dance theater of which Lin has been director since 2005.

“I was inspired by the Belgian poet George Rodenbach and his symbolic novel Bruges-la-Morte,” Lin said about her latest work. “This dance piece probes the mind of a distressed widower.”

Instead of just telling the story, Lin focuses on the psychological and emotional aspects.

According to the German media, Lin's dance pieces evoke similar feelings as the movies directed by Taiwanese Ang Lee.

Lin, who was born in Yilan and is currently based in Germany, said it means a lot to her to stage her work in Taiwan.

“I am excited about presenting my work at home,” she said, adding that the piece made its world debut in Germany last November and will be staged in Asia for the first time when it opens in Taipei.

Lin left Taiwan at the age of 15 to attend the Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome and later became a student of modern dance choreographer Pina Bausch.

Her dance pieces have won rave reviews in Europe in recent years.
