Upon arrival at the gallery, Chow and her entourage were greeted by the chief curator. The facade of the gallery is draped with three large brightly colored cloth hangings featuring traditional Taiwanese floral patterns, which have attracted the attention of many tourists. As photography is prohibited inside the gallery, Chow politely asked a group of Taiwan reporters covering her current overseas trip to stop following her to avoid breaking the museum's regulations or disturbing other visitors. Chow arrived in Vancouver Feb. 4 as the honorary head of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. She is the first ROC first lady ever to visit Canada since diplomatic ties were severed between the two countries in 1970. She attended a Cloud Gate performance Feb. 5 at the Cultural Olympiad being held in the city. On Saturday, Chow visited the Museum of Vancouver, where Taiwan-born Canadian artist Ed Pien is staging a solo show titled "Tracing Night" -- a large maze-like installation that combines drawing, video and sound to recreate the phenomenon of night and darkness. Chow later visited the "Lantern Forest" -- a corridor that displays over 2,000 lanterns created by children from Canada and Taiwan to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year Festival and the opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. During her stay, Chow was also scheduled to attend a book donation ceremony at the Vancouver Public Library, where she was to read stories to local children. Before the Vancouver leg of her trip, she had accompanied the Cloud Gate dancers to Washington, D.C. and Chicago in the United States. They are scheduled to return to Taiwan Feb. 9.
