Updated Tuesday, February 2, 2010 10:11 am TWN, CNA 'Avatar' receipts in Taiwan close in on 'Titanic' box office recordThe science fiction blockbuster had a box office of NT$15.87 million (US$495,000) in Taipei City over the weekend, pushing the movie's receipts to NT$368 million in Taiwan's largest city and NT$780 million throughout the country, the film's distributor said yesterday. Titanic set the box office record for Taiwan with NT$800 million in receipts, but Avatar has now pulled close behind, said 20th Century Fox. Avatar held on to the top position at the box office worldwide for the seventh week in a row, grossing US$594.47 million in North America to date. It has already become the highest grossing film in history with more than US$2 billion in box office receipts around the world, exceeding Titanic's take of US$1.835 billion.
