Israel representative office organizes two fundraising concerts

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Renowned Israeli pipe-organ musician Roman Krasnovsky will stage two concerts next week in southern Taiwan to raise funds for those who were affected by Typhoon Morakot, which devastated the southern half of the country in August.

"After our immediate supply of Israeli water purifiers and water containers to damaged areas in the south, we were looking for additional opportunities to help people (who) suffered and institutions damaged by Typhoon Morakot, " Raphael Gamzou, representative of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei (ISECO), was quoted as saying in a statement.

"Typhoon Morakot took place in August, yet we felt that even after four months people in the affected southern areas should not be forgotten and feel that we all still care for them and for their mental and physical recovery," he added.

Morakot swept through Taiwan Aug. 8-9, killing more than 600 people. The damage caused by the typhoon in parts of Chiayi, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung counties in southern Taiwan and Taitung County in eastern Taiwan was the worst in 50 years.

According to the statement, following Krasnovsky's recital on Nov. 14 at the C.K.S. National Concert Hall in Taipei, he will perform two concerts for charity at Tainan Theological College and Seminary Nov. 17 and Ko San Presbyterian Church in Kaohsiung Nov. 19.

Taiwan Holocaust Museum, the Tainan City government and the Kaohsiung Medical University Christian Fellowship are organizing the concerts together with the ISECO.

Pastor Alex Chuo, from a church in Tainan County's Rende Township, told the Central News Agency that the concerts have special meaning given that Krasnovsky, who is a Holocaust survivor, will visit the Holocaust Museum in Tainan and bring his artistic talents to serve the charitable cause.

Noting that some concert tickets will be distributed for free while others will be sold for NT$500 (US$15.5) each to raise funds, Chuo also encouraged participants to make donations, which will be used to fund Kaohsiung Medical University's free medical service program in mountainous regions battered by Typhoon Morakot.
