Taiwan ensemble takes to stage in NYC

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwan-based ensemble brought a chapter of a legendary story from the Tang Dynasty to the international stage in New York City.

Taiwan's Han-Tang Yuefu Music Ensemble (HTYF) (漢唐樂府) reproduced Nankuan music (南管) and Liyuan dance (梨園), one of the oldest Chinese music and dance styles, for the production. The chapter, based on an ancient panting “The Feast of Han Hsi-tsai” (韓熙載夜宴圖), tells the story of an Imperial official being sent to observe the extravagant life of Han.

Yip Kam-tim (葉錦添), an Academy Award winner, works with the ensemble and designed the costumes and sets.

The 2-hour production, running from Nov. 3 to 8, is part of an event called “Ancient Paths, Modern Voice” (古今迴響) being held at Carnegie Hall, a concert venue in Manhattan. The festival, celebrated from Oct. 21 through Nov. 10, honors China's dynamic culture and its widespread influences.

Chen Mei-o (陳美娥), founder and artistic director of HTYF, appreciated all the support they have received and urged the government to offer more help for art groups.

The 26-year-old ensemble previously performed in France's Festival D'Avignon in 1998 and New York's Lincoln Center in 2003 on invitation.
