Over 28,000 people apply for e-passport in one day

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More than 28,000 people in Taiwan applied for electronic passports Friday, the last day before charges for a new Republic of China passport were raised NT$400 to NT$1,600 (US$50), the director-general of the Bureau of Consular Affairs said Saturday.

Lo Yu-chung called the figure the country's highest ever in terms of new passport applications.

The adjusted charge for a regular e-passport with a 10-year period of validity will take effect March 1.

Taiwan began issuing e-passports in Dec. 2008, becoming the 60th country to issue this type of passport, which boasts increased anti-fraud and security features.

As of last Dec. 31, some 1 million e-passports had been issued, with another 250,000 issued so far this year, according to Lo.

The e-passport, also called a chip passport, has a small contact-less integrated circuit embedded in the back cover. It looks similar to a regular passport except for the designation of e-passport on the cover, 52 pages instead of 48, and scenic or folk custom themes printed on the inner pages.
