Mother who killed baby has sentence reduced

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A woman, surnamed Chien, who killed her baby with 51 stabs, was sentenced to seven years in prison and was deprived of her civil rights for three years yesterday by the Court of Appeal of the Taiwan Supreme Court yesterday. Her original sentence was 15 years in prison and deprivation of her civil rights for seven years.

The court said the sentence was reduced after considering that she was under the influence of chronic depression and psychosis caused by her extramarital affair, and that she had deeply regretted her act and had attempted to commit suicide twice afterwards. Chien suspected her four-month-old baby was not her husband's but was conceived by her lover at work instead. Worried that her affair would be exposed, she violently stabbed her baby to death in June last year. After a DNA test the child was proved to be her husband's after all.
