Drivers warned not to block car license plates with bikesConsumers should choose matching bike racks for their vehicles to avoid being penalized, they said. Many bikers have been fined after their car license plates or taillights were covered by bike racks on the back of the vehicles, according to Legislator Huang Wei-cher of the Democratic Progressive Party at a press conference yesterday. Chuang Hong-chun, an official from the National Police Agency said police will issue violators tickets with fines ranging from NT$2,400 to NT$4,800 in order to ensure traffic safety. Chen Yen-bo, an official at the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said the rules are being adopted to maintain transport safety. All bike racks used on vehicles to carry bicycles should be attached with a certified label showing they have passed inspection for quality and specifications, he said. However, there are various specifications for different models of vehicles. Racks and bikes could fall to cause traffic accidents after being detached from the cars by vibration of the vehicles or when braking is done, he explained. Manufacturers of the bike racks should remind customers about the different models of the products. Consumers should make sure to purchase the suitable bike racks that match with their cars for safety and avoid violating the traffic regulations, he said. The MOTC official also said license plates affixed to vehicles should not be concealed or blocked, either intentionally or unintentionally. Moving the affixed license plates from the designated spot on the car will bring about even stiffer fines of NT$3,600 to NT$12,000, he said. | |||||||||||||
