Taiwan not to follow HK in raising H5N1 alert level

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Health (DOH) will not follow Hong Kong’s move to raise the bird flu alert level despite the confirmation of yet another H5N1-inflicted human fatality in China, a disease control official said.

Lin Ting, deputy director of the DOH’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC), made the remarks after Hong Kong announced earlier in the day that stricter epidemic control measures will be imposed on its borders with China for four weeks effective immediately.

Hong Kong authorities took the move as Chinese authorities confirmed that a 44-year-old migrant worker died Monday in the southern province of Guangdong after apparently catching the deadly H5N1 virus.

It was the third H5N1-related human fatality reported in China so far this year. The other two cases were recorded in Hunan and Guangxi provinces. All three victims had been in close contact with poultry before becoming sick, according to Chinese reports.
