Half of Tainan students date online

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Junior high school students in the southern city of Tainan have shown a heavy reliance on the Internet to find dates and gain knowledge about sex, according to the results of a survey released yesterday by the Tainan City Family Education Center.

The survey revealed that 58 percent of respondents sought to meet someone of the opposite sex online and 71 percent were in favor of using the Internet to meet friends, either of the opposite sex or the same sex.

Among the most common methods adopted by the respondents to meet friends online, 73 percent did so through instant messengers, 55 percent through online games and 23 percent through blogs.

While 35 percent of respondents said they would have the first real meeting with the friends they met online within one month, 39 percent would do so between one and three months.

The survey found that 48 percent of respondents obtained knowledge about sex through the Internet and that 63 percent had visited a pornographic Web site or looked at pornographic magazines, films, comics or photos.

Some 48 percent obtained information about pornographic Web sites through search engines while 22 percent did so through e-mails forward to them by others.

Despite the high acceptance of modern cyber technology among the respondents, the survey showed that their attitude toward sex was rather traditional. Approximately 80 percent of respondents said they cannot accept one-night stands, for example, and 56 percent said they were against pre-marital sex.

Meanwhile, nearly 90 percent of respondents objected to having sex without using a condom, 62 percent were against the idea of having kids while still in school, and 40 percent did not think having a shotgun marriage would be responsible behavior.

While 90 percent of respondents considered it important for them to receive education on ways to prevent sexual harassment, approximately 90 percent did not agree with the notion that boys have no need to receive education on sexual assault prevention.

Thirty-nine percent of respondents had never discussed gender issues with their parents, and if they have any problems concerning relationships, 68 percent said they would seek help over the Internet.

The survey was carried out in January among 1,164 students from 12 junior high schools in Tainan City.
