Children’s ‘English village’ opens in Taichung County

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s first “English village” for children featuring a total language immersion environment opened Saturday at Taichung English and Art Museum in Dali City in Taichung County.

The “village” occupying 15,206.61 square meters is comprised of 21 theme rooms to give students a simulated experience of life in English, including a model flight cabin, a mock immigration agency, an airport lobby and a restaurant.

Taichung Magistrate Huang Chung-sheng said at the inauguration ceremony that the most important function of the village is providing an all-English learning environment for students.

“The learning center, touted as the first of its kind in Taiwan, is aimed at stimulating children’s natural ability to learn English in an all-English learning environment and allowing them to improve their English without going abroad,” Huang said.

To celebrate the village’s inauguration, more than 300 children were provided with the chance that day to experience the full English environment in which they can learn and practice English through language immersion classes.

“It’s funny because I felt like I was in a foreign restaurant and that learning English was just like playing a game,” one 7-year-old girl said.
