TAIPEI, Taiwan –– A man assaulted his wife yesterday while the couple was filling out di

vorce documents at Chang Hua Household Registration Office in central Taiwan, Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

The husband, a Taiwan national, grabbed a previously concealed knife and allegedly attempted to murder his Chinese wife.

She was holding her one-year-old son as her husband pressed the knife against her throat.

“I first snatched the kid; otherwise he would have been stuck in between the fighting couple,” said the police officer on duty at the Household Registration Office in a TVBS interview. He was able to successfully overpower the attacker.

The couple were married for eight years, but divorced for a short period of time. Last year, they decided to remarry to better take care of their young child. “After drinking alcohol or for any other reason, my husband often beats me,” said the woman afterwards.

The father of the attacker replied that his son had complained that in order to sleep with his wife, she would ask him for money.

Last August, a 36-year-old man also assaulted and fatally wounded his 25-year-old wife while the couple was filing for a divorce at Miaoli Household Registration Office in northern Taiwan. The husband, surnamed Chiu, escaped the crime scene, while the victim was being transported to Da Chien General Hospital Emergency Room.

The young woman, however, died from her wounds after arriving at the hospital. Chiu was arrested two days later in a motel after a failed suicide attempt.
