Kaohsiung Lantern Festival to open Feb. 16

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival is scheduled to open in the southern port city Feb. 16, an official of the city’s Bureau of Redevelopment said yesterday.

The 16-day festival is being organized by the bureau to mark the Feb. 21 Lantern Festival,traditionally celebrated in Chinese communities with a variety of folklore activities to mark the end of celebrations related to the Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 7 this year.

According to the official, the theme for this year’s festival is “love and happiness” and the organizer has designed a large variety of “world-class” activities for festival-goers.

Kaohsiung Harbor will be the principal venue for the festival activities, as part of efforts to boost the city’s image as an international harbor city.

The activities will include concerts, fireworks displays, water dance performances,foreign dance performances and a lantern exhibition, the official went on.
