Fad for having ‘New Year’s Day babies’ is now historyMajor hospitals around Taipei witnessed only a few deliveries between New Year’s Eve and the New Year’s Day, while some hospitals had no deliveries at all during the day, according to Wu Ling-ling, a supervisor of the Nursing Department of Taiwan Adventist Hospital. Taking Adventist Hospital as an example, Wu said only four expectant mothers were in the hospital to deliver their babies Monday, New Year’s Eve. All four mothers-to-be checked into the hospital after going into labor naturally. Wu said that 10 years ago, Adventist Hospital could have 700-odd new born babies delivered in a single month. However, nowadays, the hospital typically delivers only 200 newborns each month, she said. Wu said that in addition to Taiwan’s declining birth rate, fewer people select specific dates on which to have their babies delivered by Caesarean section, which is another factor contributing to the falling number of “New Year’s Day babies.” | |||||||||||||
