Homeless man reunited with niece after bicycle theft

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A homeless old man unexpectedly was reunited with his family with the assistance of the police and a reporter after being arrested for allegedly stealing a bicycle, a local newspaper reported Friday.

Liang Chien-sheng, a Vietnam-born Chinese, 70, has been homeless for over 10 years in Taiwan and has allegedly been stealing bikes since May, the United Evening News said.

Liang said he started to go to school in Taiwan at the age of 16 and went back to work in Vietnam as a teacher after being expelled by the National Taiwan Normal University, the paper added.

It was not known how he ended up homeless, or when he came back to Taiwan, as the man failed to give a very clear account of his history, the paper said.

Liang’s niece was cited by the paper as saying that her mother once offered to provide financial assistance to her uncle, but he declined.

His niece will take him back to Canada to live with her, the paper added.
