Updated Friday, December 14, 2007 0:00 am TWN, By Michelle Hsu, Special to the China Post Keelung lays out tourism plans for 2008Meanwhile, through elaborate design, the compact travel packages will impress travelers with an integrated new image of Keelung. The annual campaign will begin with the inauguration of the “Street of Tourism” on Feb. 1, incorporated into the Chinese New Year holiday in early February. Located on Yi-er Road in the vicinity of the Keelung City Government Building, the Keelung Cultural Center, Hsin-yi Financial Street, the Ai-si Night Market, and the city’s most prominent hotels, travel agencies, and restaurants, the “Street of Tourism” will present a new modern look of Keelung which has traditionally impressed tourists with its crowded old streets. “Starting from Feb. 1,” said Kao, “the street will be decorated with colorful, shining Leon lights to generate a flourishing and joyful seasonal ambiance during the Chinese New Year holiday.” A short walk from the street takes visitors to Miaokou, an eatery street famous for special Keelung delicacies such as Tempura, chicken rolls, butter crabs, slivered bean cakes, fresh seafood, and stewed eel soup. Miaokou, which literally means “the area in front of a temple,” is one of the city’s major tourist attractions traditionally crowded with thousands of people from both the city and other areas of the island during the Chinese New Year holiday. Following the New Year celebration is the Mity Tour for Spring. According to Kao, the Mity Tour is a new brand name created for the “mini city tour” proposed by the Keelung City Government. The Mity Tour service will start from the beginning of March, with tour buses picking up travelers from Taipei for a one-day tour around Keelung City. Each tour costs NT$499, covering all the transportation fees and lunch at a representative local restaurant. Mity Tour will serve different travel lines for different seasons. For more information, please visit Keelung City Government’s booth at the Taipei International Travel Fair which will run from today through the weekend. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
