New earthquake-resistant building part developed

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Researchers at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) have developed a new earthquake-resistant structure component for buildings, offering an easy-to-install solution with improved protective capabilities, NTUST sources reported yesterday.

Chen Sheng-jin, a professor at NTUST’s Department of Construction Engineering, explained that the new component — dubbed “low yield strength, energy dissipation steel structure for seismic shear force” — has proved better than conventional ones in terms of seismic wave absorption and building structure protection.

Chen noted that the new component can endure a shear deformation angle of more that 16 degrees, far greater than architecture safety requirements, making building structures secure during even great earthquakes.

The NTUST research team is at present studying how to integrate the component in shear walls, Chen said, adding that based on a prototype experiment, when combined with high-strength beams, the earthquake-resistant design can hold a building intact under a lateral displacement of six degrees, a figure also better than the requirement of two to four degrees.
