Semiconductor equipment demand on the rise

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s demand for semiconductor equipment is expected to break the US$9.5 billion mark this year, with an annual growth of 30 percent or more, officials responsible for industrial services assessed yesterday.

In 2006, the market scale stood at US$7.31 billion, with an annual growth rate of 7.5 percent, said the officials of the Industry and Technology Intelligence Services (ITIS), which is run by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Industrial Technology.

Trading on exposure and drawing equipment, etching devices and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment took the lion’s share of the market during the first three quarters of the year, according to ITIS statistics.

The officials said Taiwan is expected to catch up with Japan in 2009 in terms of market scale in semiconductor equipment and could surpass Japan to become the world’s largest semiconductor market by 2010.
