Changhua County to harness wind power

CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- Changhua County plans to have 244 wind turbines built in its Changbin Industrial Park, reshaping the landscape of the coastal area, the county government indicated yesterday.

County government officials said the construction contracts have been awarded to four wind power companies, including the state-owned Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower).

Of the 244 wind turbines, 98 will be constructed on land, with the remaining 146 to be installed in shallow waters off the coast of Changhua County, the officials said.

They pointed out that at present, Taipower has completed 23 wind turbines, which began commercial operations on April 22 this year, and that another company will have 32 units completed by the end of this year.

When all the 244 windmills are in operation, they will have a combined installed capacity of 696,700 kilowatts, according to the officials.
