Kinmen ready for all-out war to exterminate rats

KINMEN, Taiwan -- The Kinmen county government is calling on all residents on the outlying island, including the military and civilians, to take part in a week-long campaign in November to exterminate rats.

A spokesman for the county government said the personnel in all of Kinmen’s township governments will be asked to take part in the campaign Nov. 5-11 to help eliminate rats in order to reduce the incidence of rat-borne diseases.

He added that the tools to be used will include rat poison, rat cages and rat glue traps supplied by local government agencies.

Statistics compiled by the Kinmen County Health Bureau show that of the 90 scrub typhus cases reported in the first nine months of this year, 68 were confirmed, comprising 45 civilians and 23 soldiers.

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile, infectious illness transmitted by the bite of chigger mites that live on rats. Patients experience abrupt onset of high fever, severe headache, myalgia and scabs resembling cigarette burns.
