TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More than 12,000 people participated in last Saturday's recruitment examination fo

r 248 job vacancies at the Taiwan Post Company, with most candidates holding a bachelor's or master's degree and five with Ph.D. degrees, company sources revealed.

The job seekers included graduates from Taiwan's top schools, including National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University, and middle-aged applicants. The eldest candidate was 60 years old.

Company officials say applicants were likely drawn to the attractive salary range of NT$24,000 to NT$41,000, which is higher than that offered for similar positions in the private sector.

Records revealed that two Ph.D. holders had applied for the lowest-paid counter service positions, competing with over 9,500 other hopefuls, 7,000 of whom held a university or junior college degree and 1,000 with a degree from vocational high schools.

Another 2,048 candidates, including 564 with a master's degree and three with a Ph.D. degree, applied for just 24 available positions in the company's insurance business.

Information processing and securities investment operations attracted 1,144 applicants.
