The job seekers included graduates from Taiwan's top schools, including National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University, and middle-aged applicants. The eldest candidate was 60 years old.
Company officials say applicants were likely drawn to the attractive salary range of NT$24,000 to NT$41,000, which is higher than that offered for similar positions in the private sector.
Records revealed that two Ph.D. holders had applied for the lowest-paid counter service positions, competing with over 9,500 other hopefuls, 7,000 of whom held a university or junior college degree and 1,000 with a degree from vocational high schools.
Another 2,048 candidates, including 564 with a master's degree and three with a Ph.D. degree, applied for just 24 available positions in the company's insurance business.
Information processing and securities investment operations attracted 1,144 applicants.
