Police will not carry firearms to homes: National Police AgencyThe official was responding to a local newspaper report that policemen will be allowed to carry firearms while conducting what the newspaper claimed are “census visits” to the homes of parolees, known suspects and known criminals under newly revised regulations governing police work. Quoting unidentified low-ranking police officers, the Taipei-based China Times said that as police officers tend to conduct the so-called “census visits” during their daily patrols — during which they are obliged to be armed — the amended police regulations could lead to the scenario in which police officers enter private homes carrying firearms for census surveys. In response to the newspaper’s claims, the NPA spokesman pointed out that the agency has never demanded police officers carry firearms when conducting census visits. In fact, since 1992, the official noted, the police have not even been involved with population registration affairs. With the evolution of Taiwan’s democratic development, the official went on, the police have not needed to conduct census surveys. | |||||||||||||
