Betel nut stand robbers ask victim for forgiveness

KEELUNG, Taiwan -- Two brothers who were arrested for robbing a betel nut stand yesterday begged for forgiveness from the victim, local media reported.

The men, Lo Chih-chiang, 29, and Lo Wang-chieh, 30, were caught by police officers Wednesday seven hours after the suspects, armed with knives, robbed a betel nut stand near their residence in northern Keelung City.

The suspects made out with NT$1,850 in cash, as well as cigarettes and betel nut bags. The betel nut salesgirl, a 25-year-old Vietnamese national, was slashed on her arm when she tried to resist the suspects.

When the siblings’ father went to visit them, he said he was disappointed at them, reported the United Evening News. The suspects were visibly upset and, in the presence of their father, kneeled down to ask for forgiveness from the betel nut salesgirl.

According to police, the brothers are drug addicts. The younger Lo had been released from jail in April after a seven-year sentence for drug trafficking.

Because the younger Lo did not have money to sustain his addiction, he enlisted his older brother to rob the local betel nut stand.
