Japan calls for calm after double ten military review

TOKYO -- Japan appealed for calm yesterday after Taiwan showed off two home-developed missiles in a rare military parade seen as sending a message to China.

“Japan has kept saying the same thing, that the two sides should resolve this problem through peaceful dialogue,” chief government spokesman Nobutaka Machimura told reporters.

“It will not help to take actions that would strengthen military tensions,” he said. The military parade was the first in 16 years by Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory awaiting reunification. The two split in 1949 after China’s civil war. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945 and a group of Japanese conservatives vocally support the island.

Japan, like most countries, recognizes only Beijing as China’s government. Japan has been working in the past year to improve relations with China which often face strains related to wartime history.
