The military parade was the first in 16 years by Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory awaiting reunification. The two split in 1949 after China’s civil war. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945 and a group of Japanese conservatives vocally support the island. Japan, like most countries, recognizes only Beijing as China’s government.
