International art biennial opens at Taichung museum

TAIchung, Taiwan -- The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMOFA) announced yesterday the 2007 Asian Biennial will open on Oct. 13, in Taichung City. The international event will run until Feb. 24 next year under the theme “Have you eaten yet?” — a common salutation in Taiwan that carries goodwill and caring.

A total of 38 artists and art groups from 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe will present more than 76 artworks during the biennale. Artists will use documentaries, paintings, photography, music or other media to explore four sub-themes: dreams, ways of life, time, and inner personality.

“The discussions between local and international artists will allow them to share their experiences,” said Ava Hsueh, director of the NTMOFA.

Local artists presenting their work at the biennial were selected based on their unique background and experiences, said the organizers.

Lim Giong, 44, is a composer from Taichung whose “light and music” presentation has been selected for the biennial’s opening ceremony on Thursday evening.

“This is my very first art show,” he said excitedly.

Conversely, Huang Sheng-yuan, 45, is an architect from Yilan County whose exhibited in international biennial shows in the United States and Europe.

Last year, he represented Taiwan during the world-famous “Venice Art Biennial,” where he greatly impressed organizers. “Our presentation was in strong contrast with the ‘grand futuristic projects’ made by other participants,” he said. “But who cares,” he continued. “What is important is to be ‘honest’ and build friendships with other participants.”
