Firms invited to invest in Dominican Republic

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Visiting Dominican Republic Vice President Rafael Alburquerque made an appeal yesterday for more Taiwanese companies to invest in his country once the country’s science park is completed.

Alburquerque, who was here to participate in celebrations of the Republic of China’s Oct. 10 National Day, made the appeal during a visit, accompanied by his Taiwanese counterpart Annette Lu, to several science parks and a free trade zone located in Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan.

Lu hailed the planning and the achievement of a semiconductor and optoelectronics science park constructed by Formosa Plastics Group, adding that it might serve as a model for the Dominican Republic in the planning of its own science park.

Noting that both Taiwan and the Dominican Republic are island countries and that both have maintained solid diplomatic ties for several decades, Lu said she believes that Taiwan’s process of high-tech development can be taken as a lesson by the Dominican Republic.

Alburquerque mentioned that the Dominican Republic and Taiwan have been cooperating closely on several projects, and expressed hope that his country’s science park will lure more Taiwanese enterprises to invest there.

Taiwan and the Caribbean country have recently concluded the first round of Free Trade Agreement negotiations, and President Chen Shui-bian expressed hope Monday that such talks will proceed rapidly.
